(Radnor, PA) – The U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) recently announced the most successful utility green power programs in the country. The top 10 lists rank utility programs that offer renewable energy products to their customers in a variety of categories. Four Community Energy partners made three of the lists; total renewable energy sales, total number of customer participants, and customer participation rate.
As a supplier or marketer to 17 different electric utility or competitive electric supplier programs, Community Energy serves over 130,000 clean energy customers around the country.
“The success of voluntary wind energy programs is an important part of the growth of the wind power industry,” said Martin Mugica, the senior vice president of Iberdrola Renewables. “The growth of these programs generates demand for new clean energy supply around the country. As we work to meet that demand, we will create new jobs, greater energy security, and a cleaner planet.”
NREL highlighted the following Community Energy-affiliated programs in their rankings for 2007:
The PECO WIND program in Pennsylvania ranks fifth in total number of customer participants, with 38,548, and tenth in total sales, with 160 million kilowatt hours (kWh) sold. In Illinois, the City of Naperville program ranked sixth in customer participation rate, with 6.7 percent.
National Grid’s GreenUp program in New York, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts is the ninth largest program in total sales with over 180 million kWh, and seventh largest in number of participants with 24,429. CEI serves 44 percent of those customers among the six providers in the program. In New York, NYSEG and RGE’s combined Catch the Wind program has attracted 19,520 customers, which ranks tenth.
Customers in these programs on average pay about $7.50 per month for green power. The total estimated environmental benefits created by the renewable energy purchased in these programs is equivalent to removing almost 30,000 cars or planting over 130,000 acres of trees per year.
Boulder, Colorado-based NREL is the U.S. Department of Energy’s primary national laboratory for renewable energy and energy efficiency research and development. The NREL top 10 lists for 2007 can be viewed in their entirety at: http://www.eere.energy.gov/greenpower/resources/tables/topten.shtml.
