Radnor, PA – Radnor Township today announced its commitment to double its purchase of PECO WIND energy compared to last year. This clean, renewable wind power purchase is now equal to twelve percent of Radnor Township’s energy use. Hundreds of Radnor area residents and businesses also have joined Radnor Township in purchasing wind power through the PECO WIND program.
“We’re proud to step up as a leader in our community, and to do our part for the environment. Our residents recognize and value the commitment we’ve made to a safe and secure energy future. It’s reassuring to know that our day to day operations are now being powered by clean, renewable energy. We hope others will follow our lead and make the choice as well,” said Lisa Paolino, vice president of the Radnor Township Board of Commissioners.
Radnor Township will buy 19,600 kilowatt hours (kwh) of renewable energy per month. Compared to the average generation mix in the regional electric grid, the estimated environmental benefit from this purchase is equal to offsetting approximately 294,000 pounds of carbon dioxide per year, the impact of which is equivalent to planting more than 120 acres of trees each year or not driving 335,000 miles.
“The Board saw this as our opportunity to embrace our efforts in going greener. This commitment coupled with our membership in the Mayor’s Climate Protection Act of promoting Cool Cities really puts the Township operations and community in a great position of reducing our carbon footprint on the world. Thus, doing our small part to help ensure a safe and secure energy future for our residents and their families,” said Dave Bashore, Township manager.
PECO WIND is supplied by Community Energy, Inc., a company headquartered in Radnor. Executive Vice President Brent Alderfer stated, “Radnor Township is a leader in so many ways, and is now leading the way on energy. The Township’s decision to put their energy dollars to work to drive the development of clean, sustainable energy right here in Pennsylvania is the direction we all know we need to go.”
“We’re very pleased that Radnor Township has increased its support of PECO WIND,” said Denis O’Brien, PECO president and CEO. “By choosing wind generated electricity as part of their power supply, they are helping to preserve the environment and ensure the continued investment in wind power technology.”
